Blocks werden auch manchmal Blocktrommel oder - wenn aus Holz gefertigt - auch Holzblocktrommel genannt. Sie kommen sowohl in der musikalischen Früherziehung und in Guggenmusiken zum Einsatz als auch manchmal in der Popular-Musik. Werden sie aus hartem Kunststoff gefertigt, heißen Blocks auch Jamblocks und sind mit einer zusätzlichen Montagehalterung versehen. Blocks werden zumeist mit einem Holzschlägel oder einem Drumstick geschlagen und erzeugt einen dominanten Ton mit einem hohen Geräuschanteil.
